Four new substances added to the Candidate List

Last week, ECHA added 4 new substances to the SVHC Candidate list.

The SVHC Candidate list is updated twice per year, usually mid-January and mid-July. Information on these chemicals can be found on the ECHA site

This list contains chemicals that are defined as “substances of very high concern” by Article 57 of the REACH regulation in the EU.

This list is a public list of chemicals that have authorization requirements applied to them.

Substances of Very High Concern chemicals contain certain properties or that meet classification criteria for specific hazards. To be classed as SVHC, the chemical must meet one or more of the following criteria.

1.It is a carcinogen
2.It is a mutagen
3.It is toxic to reproduction
4.It is persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (i.e. a PBT chemical)
5.It has been identified by the European Commission or one of the member states of the EU and a proposal submitted requesting the chemical to be assessed as SVHC.

Just because a chemical has one or more of these hazards it does not automatically mean that the chemical is on the SVHC list.
